Mixtape Messiah 7 (Disc 1) Review

Posted by tyltempest on 08/11/2009

On the week of August 4th, Chamillionaire released his seventh and final in the Mixtape Messiah series.  Although the mixtape was four discs, the first disc was the longest and my favorite (and I’m pretty sure most people’s), and therefore the focus of my review.  After a few listens, I’d definitely rank this among the top three in the series.

This is a track by track review with a quick thought about each track with a rating alongside (copied and pasted from my original post on streetsofrap.com; I’m surprised the smilies actually came along with it as well).

Intro
N/A – Wish he had one of his usual intros. The reversed speech says: “Next time I’m telling you something, you need to listen. Cause I mean business. I don’t play games.”

Famous ft. Famous
7.5/10 – Like the hook, Cham is good on it. Not a fan of Famous.

Internet Thugs Attack
8/10 – A lot different from the other Internet Nerd’s songs. He doesn’t change his voice up as much, and it’s structured more like a normal song with a hook. Not as good as the original, but I like it more than the ones that came after.

100 Million
9.5/10 – Cham kills this. One of the best songs on the tape. He steps up his flow on this.

Best She Ever Had
8.5/10 – I don’t like the hook too much, but the verses are great, and his singing is good as usual.

Breathe
8.5/10 – I love this beat, and he does great on it. I wish is was longer though, and he could have done a good hook on this.

I Know Ya Mad ft. Bun B
10/10 – The beat on this is sick, the hook is good, and they both kill this. One of the best songs on the tape.

Denzel Washington ft. Z-Ro
8/10 – I didn’t like this as much as some of you, but it’s good. Cham’s verses are pretty good, and I like them trading lines while singing on the second verse.

Day Dream
8.5/10 – Great song, hook is dope, but again, I wish it was longer.

Jewelery Skit
N/A – I don’t really care about skits, so I skipped this

Gucci & Fendi
8.5/10 – The beat is sick, and Cham’s verses are dope. I like the lower voice he uses on this too

Playa Status
8.5/10 – Cham’s verses are good on this, and I like what he did with the hook.

This Morning
9/10 – One of the best songs on the album. I love the hook. The melody he uses sounds familiar to me.

Coming Down Candy
9/10 – I kind of skimmed over this one the first time through but on another listen it’s a great song.

Solo ft. Crooked I
9/10 – My favorite version of Creepin even though it’s the shortest. I like the new hook and Crooked I kills it as usual. It’s also Cham’s best verse on the song.

The One
8.5/10 – Dope song. Don’t have much to say about it

Still Hustlin
9/10 – The song had a typo when I imported it into iTunes
Verses are dope, and I like the hook.

Bike Skit
N/A – I don’t really care about skits, so I skipped this

Scratch That
9/10 – His rhymes during the beginning reminded me of Ran Out Of Autotune from MM5. Song is great.

Dead Presidents
8/10 – Good song, didn’t grab me as much as the other songs on the tape.

Successful
8.5/10 – Cham said hoes Hook is the same as the original only Cham is singing it… I like Trey’s hook better Verses are good though.

One The Grind
8.5/10 – His singing voice is weird on this to me, but I like what he did with the song. His verse at the end is pretty good too.

Lonely at the Top
9.5/10 – Before I heard this I assumed whatever beat he used he would use that part from the original Creepin as the hook I love the original song for this and Cham kills this. One of the best on the tape.

Life Goes On
10/10 – Love this song. Cham and Tony singing together is Wish Tony had a better part in the song but it’s amazing either way.

Say Goodbye
10/10 – The hook is And the verses are excellent too. Amazing outro to the tape

For The Money Outro
N/A – Some blahblahblah from Cham

Overall, Mixtape Messiah 7 is definitely one of the best in the series.  Longtime fans may argue that he fell off, but I think it’s more that he has matured as an artist; he’s clearly gotten better with the more meaningful tracks, looking at the last few on the tape (Lonely at the Top, Life Goes On, Say Goodbye.  He can’t pull off that “gutta” style like he used to, but he can still pull it off better than many artists today.  Lets hope this truly marks the beginning of bigger and better things for Cham, and a third album.  Soon.
